New Zealander Ellis Meachen has been sacked as the country’s director of rugby following defeats against Russia and Georgia in the European Nations Cup, the Romanian rugby federation (FRF) said on Monday.
“The principal reason is not having achieved our aim (of finishing top of the European Cup standings 2009-2010), an aim which has been compromised by defeats against Russia and Georgia,” the FRF president George Stratton said in a statement.
A replacement for Meachen has yet to be named.
Romania face Portugal on Saturday hoping to bounce back from their recent successive setbacks, which came in the wake of victories in Spain and Germany.
