London Irish ease past Worcester

London Irish strengthened their top four ambitions by comfortably beating the Worcester Warriors 38-17 at Madejski Stadium on Sunday.

The hosts scored five tries to the Warriors’ two in this highly entertaining clash.

Irish took an early lead when Tom Homer slotted a penalty in the second minute. He doubled the tally in similar style six minutes later, before scoring yet failing to covert a try in the 12th minute to push Irish in front by 11 points.

Both side’s then battled to penetrate each other’s determined defences until Greg Rawlinson crossed over in the 27th minute, with Willie Walker obliging with the conversion.

Richard Thorpe responded with a try four minutes later and Homer made no mistake with the kick this time.

Walker pulled three points back with a penalty shortly afterwards, leaving the score at 18-10 at the break.

Irish started the second half in explosive fashion with Homer adding three more from a penalty, before Clarke Dermody and Chris Hala’ufia crossed over within three minutes of one other to propel the home team into a commanding 23 point lead.

Walker arrested the blitz by converting his own try in the 55th minute, leaving the score at 33-17 in Irish’s favour.

From there, the points dried up until Paul Hodgson provided the home supporters with one last reason to cheer with a try in the 74th minute.
