Waratahs lose Adam Freier for the season

The HSBC Waratahs will be without one of their most experienced campaigners for the remainder of the 2009 Super 14 with the news Adam Freier will not play again this season.

Freier was forced from the field in the second half of the HSBC Waratahs clash with the Brumbies at Canberra Stadium on Friday night with an upper arm injury.

Scans in Sydney yesterday revealed a bicep tear requiring surgery later this week which will see the international hooker out of action for 3-4 months.

“It’s a real blow,” said Head Coach Chris Hickey.

“Adam has been sharp for us all year and as one of the senior members of the squad he does a lot more work off the field that a lot of people don’t see.”

Hickey added that while Freier will spend the required time recovering from surgery, he will continue to play an important role in the HSBC Waratahs 2009 campaign.

“Just because Adam’s off the park doesn’t mean he’s lost to the team,” said Hickey.

“Just like Matt Dunning has been doing a mountain of work off the field, so too will Adam.”

HSBC Junior Waratahs hooker Damien Fitzpatrick will now join the senior squad.

“Fitzy’s been training with the squad since before the development tour of Fiji last year so that transition will be straight-forward,” said Hickey. “This is a good opportunity for him and I know he’s looking forward to the challenge.”

The HSBC Waratahs have a big seven days ahead Saturday’s Super 14 Final replay at ANZ Stadium against the Crusaders.
