Big Joe to go under the knife

The struggling Stormers received another setback on Monday when it was revealed that Springbok loose forward Joe van Niekerk will have to go under the knife for a knee injury.

The Stormers said that ‘Big Joe’ – as Van Niekerk is affectionately know by his supporters – will undergo a scope on his left knee on Tuesday to repair the damaged knee cartilage, an injury that was aggravated in the 22-3 Super 14 loss to the Western Force game last Friday.

According to a statement from the Stormers camp medical opinion suggests that conservative treatment measures will not cure the injury and surgical intervention will provide the shortest recovery time.

Van Niekerk is expected to make a full recovery three weeks after the procedure.

He will be assessed and rehabilitated and will potentially join the Stormers for the last two games of their Australasian tour – against the Waratahs in Sydney on March 17 and the Crusaders in Christchurch a week later.

The Stormers have lost both their matches in the first two weeks of the Super 14 tournament – 27-9 to the Cheetahs in Week One and 22-3 to the Force last week.

The Cape franchise have also yet to score a try in a season that has the potential to become a major disaster.
