Burke to lead Kavaliers against Saracens

Conrad Burke will lead the Boland Kavaliers for the first time in almost a year against English Premier club Saracens at Wellington on Wednesday. Burke missed the best part of last season due to a torn chest muscle.

If the veteran hooker can prove his fitness, he could be appointed as captain for the season. Burke leads a very inexperienced side against Chris Jack’s Saracens. Team manager Denver Pienaar is, however, very philisophical about about the strength of his side.

“Before the season started we made a promise that every single player in our training squad will get a chance to prove himself in one of the friendly matches. “Now we have done that.

Therefore it is now time for the players to put up their hands,” he said. Except for Burke, centre Dewey Swartbooi, wings Alvin Hugo and Luvo Sogidashe, and locks Nico Esterhuyse and Frikkie Spies are the only recognised players in the Boland side.

Sogidashe will make his first appearance for the Kavaliers after representing Eastern Province and the Valke the last couple of seasons. Davids has also surprised by selecting Andre du Toit on the flank despite breaking his nose against the Unversity of Cape Town last week.

The Boland team is:

Donovan Smith, Alvin Hugo, Godwin Damon, Dewey Swartbooi, Luvo Sogidashe, Jacquin Jansen, Juwell Samuels, Junior Bester, Andre du Toit, Garth Faro, Nico Esterhuyse, Frikkie Spies, Ivan Espag, Conrad Burke (capt), Christo McNish.

Replacements: Pieter Bruynhardt, Tros Botha, Smit Janse van Rensburg, Quinton de Bruyn, Denzil Willemse, Emile Smith, Lionel Corneliu00s, Wendal Wehr, Marcell du Preez, Hendrik van Niekerk.
