Bristol Rugby don’t intend to lose at Toulon

Bristol Rugby take a strong side to the South of France to face RC Toulon in their penultimate European Challenge Cup fixture on Friday evening.

Head Coach Richard Hill stated, following last weekend’s defeat at Saracens, that he wanted to see two positive performances in the European Challenge Cup against Toulon and Montpellier and his selection reflects that fact.

Luke Arscott, Tom Arscott and Lee Robinson all return to the starting line up in the back line with Nathan Brew moving into the centre and Ed Barnes shifting to fly half.

With Scott Linklater and Alfie To’oala nursing injuries suffered at Vicarage Road, David Blaney starts at hooker, Nathan Budgett replaces To’oala in the back row and Roy Winters assumes Budgett’s place in the boiler room.

“We’ve made one or two changes but gone as strong as we can. The pack went pretty well at Saracens but we’re bringing the Arscotts back and in will give Nathan Brew a run at 13 as that’s where we signed him to play.”

“Quite a few of them played well in awful conditions for the United on Monday which was a really good sign because they showed they were motivated and keen to force their way into the first team.”

“We tried to introduce a new strategy against Saracens but the accuracy and execution wasn’t quite right. But the players understand the principle and, going into the second game with it, should be able to execute it a bit better.”

“If we can do that, we’re all confident that we’re not far off being able to play as well as we can. Looking at the back line we have, it’s very exciting. If the pack can produce good quality possession, then we have the potential to play well.”

“So, we aim to go out, relax and work on this new game plan to see if we can make it work. When it clicks, we should see the real Bristol. The potential is there but we have to find the key to unlock it.”
