Burke set for return

Regular Boland hooker Conrad Burke could return to action next month when the Kavaliers take on the Natal Wildebeest in their opening Vodacom Cup match at Wellington on February 28.

Burke last year underwent an operation to a torn chest muscle that ruled him out for most of the season.

Although he is still not a hundred percent fit, he is already training with the squad. “Conrad should be fit for our opening match,” team manager Denver Pienaar said. Burke could, however, expect tough opposition from Pieter Wium, Clemen Lewis and former Blue Bull Harry Vermaas.

Two other injured Bolanders, centre Dewey Swartbooi and prop Janro van Niekerk, should also be available by the end of February.

Van Niekerk is nursing an ankle injury, while Swartbooi is suffering from a sore knee.

Meanwhile, the Kavaliers squad is hard at practice for their friendly matches against the touring English Premiership side Saracens on January 28 and the Stormers on January 31.

Coach Deon Davids is expected to select a full-strength side for the encounter. He will have a last good look at borderline players when the Kavaliers face the University of Cape Town on January 21.
