Mofu set to lead Kavaliers

Flanker Zolani Mofu seems to be the early favourite to lead the Boland Kavaliers in the 2009 Vodacom Cup rugby competition.

The departure of Piet van Zyl to the Cheetahs and Dries van Schalkwyk to the Blue Bulls as well as the injury to Conrad Burke, has forced coach Deon Davids to look at a new leader for the 2009 rugby season.

Mofu could be handed the captaincy with number eight David Hendricks and fullback Justin Peach also serious contenders. Davids, however, is not prepared to speculate on a new captain yet.

“Of course we will miss the leadership of Van Zyl and Van Schalkwyk, but their absence give other players the opportunity to show their leadership skills. “We have a lot of good leaders in our squad.

Therefore we are not in a captaincy crisis,” Davids said. Burke, who has the most experience as Boland captain, is still recovering from a chest muscle operation and seems set to miss the start of the competition.

The Kavaliers will resume training after the Christmas holidays on January 5 and have set friendly matches against the University of Cape Town and the Maties before they take on top English Premiership side Saracens and the Stormers on January 28 and 31 respectively.
