Bath and Northampton end up all square

Bath and Northampton treated the Franklin’s Gardens crowd to a thrilling display of rugby on Saturday, which ended 28-28 after a great comeback from the home side.

Bath got off to a good start, with South Africa international flyhalf Butch James slotting a penalty as early as the third minute.

Saints had a chance to get on the scoreboard a few minutes later, but centre Bruce Reihana missed his penalty attempt. It didn’t matter though as Paul Diggin scored the match’s opening try soon after, which Reihana converted.

Bath were not to be outdone and scored a try of their own a minute later. Jack Cuthbert crossed the line and James easily converted to make it 7-13 after 17 minutes. He added another penalty 10 minutes later as the visitors looked to dominate.

Saint’s Myler reduced the gap to six points a few minutes later though, taking advantage of some poor Bath discipline to slot a penalty and make it 10-16.

There was a flurry of points just before the break, as Daniel Browne scored Bath’s second try in the 36th minute, but James was unable to convert. Myler then kicked a penalty for the hosts, sending them into the change rooms on 13-21.

Scoring opportunities continued in the second half, with James missing a penalty soon after the restart. Saints were not as cavalier with their chances though reducing the gap to one after a try from Mark Easter and a Myler conversion in the 45th minute.

Saints went into the lead for the first time in the 61st minute when Myler slotted yet another penalty. Substitute Soane Tonga’uiha added a try five minutes later, but Myler was unable to convert it.

Then, just as Saints thought they had done enough, Jonny Fa’amatuainu crossed the tryline for Bath in the 71st minute. James converted and the visitors held on for the draw.
