Cardiff on top after taming Tigers

Cardiff Blues moved nearer a semi-final berth in the Anglo-Welsh Cup after beating Leicester 23-9 on Saturday.

Victory left the Blues at the top of Group A ahead of Bath’s visit to the Arms Park on Friday.

James Robinson and scrum-half Jason Blair scored a try apiece with Cardiff’s other points coming from the boot of former All Black Ben Blair. South African Derrick Houggard three penalties for the Tigers.

Gloucester too are closing in on a last four spot after just doing enough to see off Newport-Gwent Dragons 25-20, scoring four tries to the visitors’ three at Kingsholm.

Former rugby league star Lesley Vainikolo scored two tries for the Cherry and Whites with Scott Lawson and Iain Balshaw also crossing the Dragons’ line.

England’s Olly Barkley kicked the remainder of Gloucester’s points.

At The Stoop, London Irish overturned a sizeable deficit for the second time in a month to beat Harlequins 32-17.

The Exiles, who were 17-5 behind, scored 27 unanswered points to win the Group C clash.

The only consolation for Quins was the scale of Irish’s comeback this time wasn’t as great as when they recovered from 20-3 down to beat Dean Richards’s side in the Premiership.
