Abendanon says Bath can go top after Toulouse defeat

Nick Abendanon reckons Bath can still top Pool 5 despite a cruel away defeat to Toulouse. The Bath full back’s 77th minute try looked set to seal a famous win in France against the three-time Heineken Cup champions.

But David Skrela’s last-gasp penalty clinched a 18-16 victory but Abendanon believes the Guinness Premiership outfit will bounce back.

Abendanon told ERC Rugby : “Not many teams come to Toulouse and give them the runaround. It was an awesome effort and we didn’t deserve to lose. We will take the positives because we can be the number one team in this group.

“Games like this do not come around very often and it would have been the biggest win in Bath’s history for a long time.

“If we want to be a champion side these are the games we have to win.”

Bath picked up a vital losing bonus-point but will want more when they face Newport Gwent Dragons at the Recreation Ground next Sunday.

And Abendanon admits Bath only had themselves to blame for the defeat.

Abendanon said: “It was heart-breaking and we’re all gutted. We came so close and the lads are devastated.

“Toulouse are a fantastic attacking side. Our gameplan was to stop them and we all fronted up. Our mistakes cost us the game.
