Second string Toulon sink in Europe

Big-spending but struggling Toulon slumped to a 56-3 home defeat to Northampton on Thursday in the opening match of this season’s European Challenge Cup.

The French side, mindful of their lowly position in the domestic Top 14 championship where they sit fourth from bottom, fielded a second-string side and were duly punished as the Saints ran in seven tries.

Sebastien Fauque kicked Toulon into an early lead with a penalty but then it was all one-way traffic with Sean Lamont, Joe Ansbro and Paul Diggin scoring tries to give the English side a 30-3 lesd at the break.

Chris Ashton, Ben Foden, Ansbro, with a second try, and Lee Dickson all crossed to seal an easy win in the second half.
