Cabello replaces John Smit at Clermont

Bourgoin hooker Benoit Cabello has signed a two-year deal with French championship rivals Clermont, his new club confirmed on Monday.

Cabello, 28, previously played for Perpignan, Stade Francais and Bourgoin.

He will replace World Cup-winning South Africa captain John Smit (pictured) , who will not see out his contract with Clermont, after reaching an agreement to play at home next season.

Cabello’s contract with Bourgoin had included a get-out clause should they fail to qualify for the European Cup next season, which is the case as they are tenth in the Top 14.

Leaders Clermont have already booked their berth in the Top 14 semi-finals.
