Leicester Tigers dish out the awards

Johne Murphy was named Leicester Tigers player of the season at the Everards supporters evening at Welford Road.

The Ireland A cap had firmly established himself in the first-team reckoning this season and managed to score eight tries in 29 matches at full-back and at wing.

Murphy, who was also nominated in the young player and try-of-the-season categories, said: “It has been a great year.

“I wanted to play all of the games when the senior guys were away at the World Cup and it has kicked on from there.

“It’s a great honour to collect this award and I’d like to thank all the supporters, they’ve been fantastic all season.” he said in This is Leicestershire.

Tom Croft, who had already collected the players’ young player-of-the-year award, made it a double with the supporters’ vote.

The Guinness Premiership’s top try-scorer, Tom Varndell (pictured) , picked up the try-of-the-year award for one of his hat-trick at Harlequins in January.

Ben Herring was named newcomer of the year and Geordan Murphy picked up the award for outstanding service.
