Jake White ruled out as Lions coach

Ian McGeechan is widely expected to be named as British and Irish Lions coach next week on the 14th of May.

Supporting this view is the news that former Springbok coach Jake White is not in the running to coach the Lions on 2009 rugby tour of South Africa.

White’s name had been mentioned in connection with the position but White’s agent, Craig Livingstone, told SuperSport in South Africa that it was highly unlikely that the 2007 World Cup-winning coach would be among the candidates to coach the Lions.

Livingstone said White had not been approached at all and was also not a candidate to coach the Irish national team.

Should McGeechan be named as Lions coach he is expected to name his right hand man at London Wasps Shaun Edwards as his Assistant.

Edwards worked with the Wales national team in the Six nations and he also has good knowledge of English players through his work in the Guinness Premiership and Heineken Cup.

Former Wallaby coach and Springbok Technical advisor Eddie Jones’ name has been mentioned for the Assistant’s position as well.
