New Twickenham opens with a record loss

England opened their new South Stand at Twickenham with a record loss in front of a record crowd of 82 000 and the match was their sixth loss in a row. England had been hit by injury in the run up to the Test were not playing with a full squad.

Jamie Noon nearly got England off to a good start when he crossed the line diving on the ball. Noon was lieing on the ball and the TV ref could not see the ball being grounded so the try was disallowed.

Noon did get another try later in the match but the decision not to award the try had an effect on the English players. Speaking after the match Noon said, “I feel robbed by the decision, I was lying on the ball over their line, so I don’t understand why the try wasn’t given. It was a bizarre decision, but you just have to get on with it.” said Noon.

Just before half time, Joe Rokocoko and Carl Hayman’s tries put New Zealand in control of the match and gave them enough of a buffer to be able to defend the lead. After the break England did come back but the lead was too big and Charlie Hodgson’s boot was again left in the changeroom as he only hit target twice out of five shots at goal.

England took the game to the All Blacks in the second half and had a man over when Chris Masoe was sin-binned but failed to capitalise on the situation.

NZ’s fly-half Carter scored 26 points for New Zealand and this included a relatively easy try when he ran past England debutant Allen. England’s other debutant Shaun Perry did score a try which should help to keep him in contention for this week’s match against Argentina.
