McGeechan will coach the Lions to South Africa

Wasps’ director of rugby, Ian McGeechan, will be named as Lions head coach for a record fourth time.

According to a report in the Guardian,  England, Wales and Ireland did not submit a name for the coaching position on next year’s British & Irish Lions tour to South Africa, leaving the way open for the Scotsman.

McGeechan’s appointment would also increase the chances of Wasps head coach Shaun Edwards being named as assistant coach as the pair have worked well together at Wasps.

The official announcement will be made on May 14.

McGeechan was the British and Irish Lions coach in 1989, 1993 and 1997.

In 2005, he coached the midweek side on the British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand on the invitation of Sir Clive Woodward.
