Queensland referees have clubbed in to help their Fijian counterparts with enough gear to kit out 20 whistle blowers.
The Nadi Rugby Referees Association (NRRA) had sent out a call for help with sports gear and the Queensland Rugby Referees Association (QRRA) responded with a $4,000 care package comprising 20 sets of shirts, shorts, socks, law books, water bottles and red and yellow send-off cards. QRRA representative Stephen Williamson delivered the package during a recent business trip.
NRRA secretary Biu Waqaniburotu said it was the first assistance the body had ever received from an overseas association and hoped it would be the start of a continuing relationship between the two bodies.
“We look to a long term relationship and this is the beginning,” Mr Waqaniburotu told the Fiji Times.
“It is a unique moment for us. Queensland is committed to the development of referees in Fiji. We hope to have an exchange program where our referees can attend development programs in Australia.”
QRRA (Brisbane) Inc President Mark Logan said the association was delighted to have been able to help.
