Brumbies beat Reds to take 1st APC title

The ACT Brumbies beat the Queensland Reds 42-17 to win the one-off Australian Provincial Championship rugby union title. The Brumbies led 21-3 at halftime and outscored the Reds by six tries to two at Viking Park in Canberra.

Julian Huxley won man of the Man-of-the-match and converted all six Brumbies tries and scored the last try while fullback Tim Curran crossed the Reds line twice to score.

The match provided the last chance for players to impress national selectors before Wallabies coach John Connolly names a 37-man squad on Oct. 3 for the team’s November tour to Europe.

Connolly said yesterday the tournament, contested by Australia’s four Super 14 franchises, had been “extremely valuable” in deciding which players to take.

An eight-team national competition will replace it next year but the name is not known yet.
