Injury hit Castres call up Fijian

French Top 14 side Castres moved on Sunday to replace injured wingers Rafael Carballo and Pablo Canavosio by signing Fijian Neumi Nanuku till the end of the season.

Club manager Jean-Philippe Swiadek said that he did not have any concerns that it was the first time Nanuku would be playing for a European club.

“It might be the first time for him playing in Europe but he has already travelled the world playing for Fiji, especially the sevens side,” he said.

“Nanuku is a very fast and talented player. If he adapts well, we will kepp him for next season.”

Swiadek, who announced that locks Daniel Saayman and Joe Tekori had signed contract extensions for one and two years respectively, added that the situation surrounding France captain Lionel Nallet would become clearer soon.

“The president was very clear,” he said.

“Lionel will stay at Castres except if he wants to go back close to home for professional and family reasons and in that case he would rejoin Bourgoin.

“The club would release him without any indemnities being incurred because of his irreproachable and exemplary behaviour over several years.

“I find his position loyal. That is to say I hope that Lionel will be among us next season.”

Castres are in a dogfight along with Biarritz and Perpignan to make the final spot in the top four who will contest the play-offs at the end of the season – Toulouse, Clermont and Stade Francais look certain to make it – but suffered a blow on Saturday when they lost 17-12 to Montpellier.
