Bristol Rugby tight head prop Wayne Thompson has this week put pen to paper on a new two year contract.
Wayne, a local lad who attended Marlwood School and Bristol University, has come up through the Academy ranks at Bristol Rugby and has also represented England Students, England Universities and England U21s.
Wayne has spent the current season on loan at National League Division One club Newbury where he has been a regular in the first team.
24 year old Thompson feels that gaining this experience with Newbury has been crucial to his development as a prop.
“What I really needed at this stage of my career was to be playing regular rugby and my time with Newbury has been fantastic for that.”
“I’ve been playing regularly against some really good opposition and feel that my game has come on leaps and bounds. If nothing else, I’ve shown that I have the stamina, strength and durability to last a full season at the top level.”
“I’m now really looking forward to coming back to Bristol and challenging for a first team place. Jason Hobson has been an inspiration with the progress he has made and I’m hoping to follow in his first steps.”
Head Coach Richard Hill added: “This is a good example of how the loan system can really work for all parties. Wayne’s game has developed significantly for playing regularly and Newbury have benefited from his services this season.”
