Koch on Super 14 standby for Lions Baywatch

Young Lions captain Wilhelm Koch has been put on standby for Lions flanker Baywatch Grobbelaar in the Super 14.

If he is not selected for the Lions he will lead the Lions in the Vodacom Cup against the SWD Eagles in a Vodacom Cup rugby match at Ellis park on Saturday.

Koch could make his Super 14-debut if Grobbelaar doesn’t pass a fitness Test on Thursday.

The former Maties and Leopards captain and the former Sharks, and Lions star Roland Bernard, have been reunited on the side of the scrum with the younger Francois Uys at number eight. Big Willem Stoltz has been demoted from the Super 14 squad and will partner Cobus Grobler at lock.

While none of the backs have Super 14 experience, no fewer than five members of the pack have played at a higher level.

Former SA under 21 star, inside centre Thabang Molefe, hasn’t pitched for training which resulted in a reshuffled backline. Outside centre Justin St Jerry moves one place closer to the scrum and so does left wing Trekker van Tonder.

Coach Hugo van As has had to call on two UJ backs, winger Galiel Markus and centre JJ Pienaar, to make up the numbers in his squad.
