Mallett recalls Del Fava and Reato for France

Italy coach Nick Mallett increased his squad from 22 to 24 on Thursday after recalling Carlo Antonio Del Fava and Tommaso Reato for next week’s clash with France at the Stade de France.

Del Fava started in Italy’s first three matches of the campaign but was left out of the squad Tuesday after being cited, along with flanker Mauro Bergamasco, for foul play against Wales.

Del Fava was admonished at the hearing in London on Wednesday.

Flanker Bergamasco however was hit with a 13-week suspension which will see him sidelined until June 2 for gouging the eye of Wales full-back Lee Byrne during the Azzurri’s 47-8 Six Nations defeat in Cardiff last weekend.

Reato, who made his senior debut against Ireland at Croke Park – where Italy lost 16-11 – comes in to replace Bergamasco.

Bergamasco’s absence is likely to hit Italy hard in their final two matches, against France on March 9 then Scotland six days later in Rome. Also missing from Mallett’s squad for next weekend is back David Bortolussi and second row Santiago Dellape.
