Brumbies sneak home against Highlanders

The Brumbies held on to beat the Highlanders by 22 points to 20 in their first match at home in Canberra.

The Highlanders were the first to score but they were eventually outscored by three tries to two.

Stephen Hoiles scored the ACT’s only second half-try and then pulled off a try-saving tackle to help the Brumbies beat the Otago Highlanders.

The injury-hit Brumbies went into the match without backs Stirling Mortlock, Clyde Rathbone, Adam Ashley-Cooper and Gene Fairbanks.

They received a first-half penalty try and also scored five-pointers through Anthony Faingaa and No. 8 Hoiles while fullback Julian Huxley booted a conversion and a penalty.

For the Highlanders who now have 0 wins out of 2 , Fetu’u Vainikolo and Chris King scored tries while James Wilson kicked two conversions and two penalties.

The Brumbies’ backline inexperience showed early in the second half when a series of errors allowed a 17-7 halftime lead to be reduced to four points by the 50th minute after two Wilson penalty goals.

It took the Brumbies until midway through the second to steady, and they put together 15-odd phases before sending Hoiles speeding over in the corner in the 60th minute to extend their lead to 22-13.

Huxley and Alister Campbell somehow held up Highlanders No. 8 Steven Setephano in the 65th minute but a minute later King barged over, and the conversion narrowed the score to 22-20.

Hoiles then turned in a defensive gem when he ankle-tapped a runaway Vainikolo in the 71st minute to save a certain try and help the Brumbies, 1-1, cling to their lead.
