Van der Linde left out of Cheetahs Super 14 squad

Springbok World Cup prop CJ van der Linde (pictured) has been omitted from the Cheetahs Super 14 squad announced by coach Naka Drotske.

A calf injury has sidelined the big prop, with no certainty of how long recovery and rehabilitation will take.

Lock Flip van der Merwe was also not considered for the squad because of a rib injury sustained against the Free State Cheetahs in their warm-up match.

A feature of the side is that it includes four players who have played flyhalf at first-class level in Jacques Louis-Potgieter, Conrad Barnard, Springbok Meyer Bosman and Herkie Kruger — all of them good place kickers.

Springbok wing Jongi Nokwe, who has not been convincing in the warm-up outings, is included in the squad as is the strong-running former Namibian centre Hendrik Meyer.

Meyer seems to have been included as an outside centre, with both Bosman and Kruger preferring inside centre. Hennie Danillier gets the nod at fullback in place of injured Springbok Bevin Fortuin.

The big former Bulls and Boland Kavaliers fullback has been impressive on attack and defence in the warm-up outings. As expected, Springbok flank Juan Smith was entrusted with the captaincy.

The Lions will be captained by flank Cobus Grobbelaar in their first Super 14 match against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein next week. Regular captain Ernst Joubert has injured his back, and could be out for as long as six weeks.

The Cheetahs squad of 31 players is:

Hennie Daniller, Eddie Fredericks, Gavin Passens, Jongi Nokwe, Howard Noble, JW Jonker, Hendrik Meyer, Meyer Bosman, Herkie Kruger, Jacques-Louis Potgieter, Conrad Barnard, Falie Oelschig, Tobie Botes.

Duanne Vermeulen, Darron Nell, Frans Viljoen, Juan Smith (capt.), Heinrich Brussow, Kabamba Floors, Heinrich Stride, Rory Duncan, Barend Pieterse, David de Villiers, Wayne van Heerden, Wian du Preez, Kobus Calldo, Bees Roux, Ronnie Uys, Adriaan Strauss, Richardt Strauss.
